A Refelction of 2009

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

This is the time of year when one should take the time to reflect upon one’s life. I recently finished the book “Tribes” by Seth Godin and fell in love upon the first page. I had read his book “The Purple Cow” prior to reading “Tribes” and subscribe to his daily blog. I began to reflect upon 2009 and my own personal philosophies/lifestyle while reading the book and let me tell you, it was somewhat of an eye opening experience.

I am doing many things right and many things wrong. I have much to improve upon in order to achieve the level of success I am aspiring to obtain. I often find myself asking the questions “why not?” when putting limitation on myself and the business. We all do it. We all find excuses why we can’t do something. Some are logical within the given restraints of a particular situation but most are excuses. Excuses that inhibit us from moving forward, becoming something remarkable and breaking free from the ordinary.

That being said, my New Year’s resolution is to stop making excuses. Lift the barriers I put upon myself that keep me from moving forward in my personal, professional and spiritual life. These excuses are stemmed from fear: fear of failure, fear of the unknown and fear of rejection. I have come to realize that I am truly not afraid so make excuses?

NO MORE EXCUSES.

Buying Local

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Owning my own business has changed my life and given me a completely different outlook on things and how I spend my money. Funny how that always seems to happen when you get a “behind the scenes” perspective on something.

We are now into the heart of holiday shopping mayhem and I fore one have yet to start decorating or shopping, but that is what happens when you work retail and exert all of your holiday cheer into your business instead of your personal life, which kind of is your business in a way.

Our holiday orders are beginning to roll in. It tickles me pink when customers choose to buy our granola over some cheesy gift basket from the grocery store or Wal-Mart. Most of the time our gifts cost less, taste better and are delivered to your home for no additional cost (if you are within 20 miles of the market).

I have made a personal commitment to buy from fellow business owners. I will admit, I am not as dedicated to buying local as I want to be… it is something I am working to improve on a daily basis. I make a conscious effort to plan my trips but life is crazy and sometimes shopping at the big box stores is necessary in a time crunch. But the point is I am trying and I encourage you all to do the same. Even if it is just one item… like our granola. Then try buying local produce, then milk, then bread… little by little your local consumption will increase. It doesn’t mean you have to or will (I am by no means a local purist) go 100% local. Start small, you will be surprised our easy, fun and affordable it is to shop at independently owned stores in your own backyard.
